Richard D Hodsdon recently retired after over 33 years as an assistant Washington County attorney with the Washington County Attorney's Office in Stillwater, Minnesota. He represented Washington County in all aspects of civil law practice and also acts as a criminal prosecutor. Mr. Hodsdon represented the county sheriff and the elected county attorney, with particular emphasis with the Sheriff's Office. He remains a consultant and legal educator, providing consulting services to public criminal justice and corrections administrators, particularly Sheriff's Offices, on policy development and operations. Mr. Hodsdon is an instructor in a wide range of civil and criminal topics, including data practices and personnel, employment and labor law, discrimination and civil rights law, corrections law, and liability and civil commitments. He is an instructor for the International Academy of Public Safety, National Institute of Corrections and the Minnesota State College System. Mr. Hodsdon is an adjunct faculty member for the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety. He is counsel to the Minnesota Sheriff's Association and provides legal advice and representation to the association and its members; including emergency operations, patrol, jail personnel and employment law, and all other matters relating to operation of the Sheriff's Office, as well as management of a non-profit organization. In this position, Mr. Hodsdon serves as corporate counsel to the Association, as well as assists individual members. He serves as a citizen member and chair of the board that licenses Minnesota private detectives and protective agents. Prior to Washington County, Mr. Hodsdon spent a year in private practice and eight years as an Assistant Minnesota Attorney General. He earned his B.A. degree from Concordia College, his J.D. degree from the University of Minnesota Law School and his Master's degree in public administration from Hamline University. Mr. Hodsdon is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, Minnesota Sheriffs Association and the National Sheriffs Association (Legal Advisors Committee), and is admitted to practice before the Minnesota Supreme Court, federal courts and the United States Supreme Court.
